Introducing a New Formative Assessment Tool for MAPPEN

We are excited to announce a new formative assessment tool for MAPPEN. We have developed this new feature in response to feedback about the usability of our student-friendly rubrics for the purposes of summative assessment and reporting.

We have just added an observation sheet to each task. Each printable sheet includes a list of learning intentions and success criteria and a list of students in the class. Teachers can use this sheet to record which success criteria each student has met during a task. Teachers can download the observation sheet by clicking on the attachment at the bottom of each task.

In order to indicate which success criteria each student meets, teachers are required to add the names of the students in their class. To do this:

  1. Click on your name in the top right corner of the screen.

  2. Click on ‘Students’. From here you can add or remove students.

For the moment, the observation sheet is a printable document. We are working on producing a digital version that will save student achievement data in a secure database. We are also developing an app that will allow teachers to take a photo of a completed sheet and upload the information to MAPPEN.

We will use the student data in the new digital tool to produce an Assessment Matrix. This matrix will assist teachers to identify the level that each student has achieved for each subject in a learning sequence. We will be publishing a sample of this document for your feedback in the near future.

Our hope is that this tool will provide teachers with a simple and powerful diagnostic tool to formatively assess student achievement to assist with differentiation and report writing. If you have any suggestions or questions about this document or our plans, please contact
