Ensuring an accurate and respectful representation of the cultures of the First Peoples of Australia
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are the oldest, continuous cultures in the world, having existed in Australia for at least 65,000 years. We believe that it is important represent these cultures accurately and respectfully in our curriculum.
As a start to an ongoing project our content has been reviewed by the Koorie Heritage Trust. Their review has suggested some minor changes to tasks that incorporate content that relates to the cultures of the First Peoples of Australia. Most of the recommendations are about using the best and most appropriate language and attributing artefacts and stories to the specific language groups and we are in the process of making these changes in response to their feedback.
After we complete each review we will add a note to the bottom of the appropriate task indicating that the review has been completed.
We are also in discussion with other organisations around Australia to ensure that our content is representative of different language groups.
